We've recently been seeing a bunch of leaks concerning Apple making OLED iPads, especially the 10.9" iPad Air. However, there are a bunch of people who have been misunderstanding what this means for Apple's iPad lineup.

In this video, I discuss and compare the differences between OLED and Mini-LED to show you why Apple ultimately chose Mini-LED for their 12.9" M1 iPad Pro.

I then talk about why professional display makers like Sony are ditching OLED tech and moving toward dual-layer LCD displays and Micro-LED displays.

I then discuss what Apple's iPad lineup is gonna look like in terms of the display tech, including which iPads will be getting OLED displays

This guy is all cap… I can easily show you examples where my Galaxy Tab S7+5G destroys my new 12.9 inch iPad Pro’s MiniLed. Sure my iPad Pro gets brighter, but tons of blooming, no where near as rich in color, and all that light reflecting off the S7+ screen that Max was faking is nowhere near as he was pretending it to be in his other comparison videos… I love iPads, I own the last two models, but I had to return my M1 iPad Pro, because it just wasn’t better in the display compared to my Galaxy Tab S7+5G, and I still prefer my older iPad to edit videos, it’s faster that my S7+, but everything else goes to the Tab S7+5G hands down! Yes, I fell for all the hype on the new iPad until I took it home, nothing like doing your own comparison with your own eyes, and everyone knows Max is biased towards Apple, but MiniLed will NEVER truly compare to OLED until it can compensate with the exact amount of local dimming zones per pixel, on ANYTHING… Just being able to get bright isn’t going to cut it, stop misleading people…

Decided against the 12.9”, since I luckily had access to free 11” Apple iPad accessories (magic keyboard & folio). I also have a maxed out intel 2020 MacBook Pro 13” (needed this model for work), so I don’t want to have a mini led on my ipad and retina on my laptop. I’d rather have my iPad have the same display. I’ll upgrade to mini led when it is a little better. I’ll stick with my 2020 13” mbp (32gb ram/ 4tb ssd) & 2021 11” iPad Pro (16gb ram/2tb ssd). My setup future proofs me for my needs.

@Sherif Mousa People don't use their iPhones for editing 4k/8k HDR videos...it's usually done on ipads and macbooks...that's why they don't use oled on ipad , macbooks, or the XDR display...OLED is not bright enough to edit HDR....Why do you think the XDR Display that they sell for 6000 dollars uses mini-led technology and not OLED ???

Some of your points, out of context make sense, but here's the thing the most important aspect of picture quality is contrast ratio and black level. There is a very obvious reason why in OLED beats LCD displays every year. Mini LED is still just LCD with a better backlighting system. What you can say is that when micro LED arrives it will be better then OLED as micro LED is an impressive display like OLED but can get very bright and last a very very long time. In 5 to 10 years micro LED will be priced for normal people and that will be the last great tech display change. I would take an OLED iPad over any LCD based iPad no matter how bright it gets.

To me OLED is a superior display technology to the mini-LED. The mini-LED is just a temporary hack-job that Apple did, till they could come up with something better. So I agree with the rumor that says OLED will only arrive in 2023, since that will give time for Apple to move away from mini-LED and up to Micro-LED in their PRO models, and then put OLED into the lower models.

    • musicbymason
      musicbymason

Two things, the way you write it makes it seem that Apple "came up" with mini-LED technology which is not true and second, micro-LED will take 5-10 years before the price is consumer friendly. it is strange though that Apple made mini-LED for the "pros" but I think it is mainly for the brightnss, the better contrast ratio (albiet not as good as OLED) but most importanly has the longevity going for it. There is no pixel burn in or other downsides of OLED

First, I love the channel; it’s truly one of my favorite tech channels on YT! With that said, I seriously disagree with your iPad Air 4 take! Most general consumers have little to no need for the iPad Pro’s extra features, and to suggest that the budget iPad is better than the Air is preposterous. A general consumer can buy the Air 4 and not have to upgrade 5 years due to the chipset IMHO.

On March 29 2021, JOLED (formed by merging Japan Display's, Sony's and Panasonic's OLED devisions) announced that they started shipments of their OLEDIO panels that are manufactured via a inkjet printing process, targeted at "high-end monitors, medical monitors, automotive displays", and in sizes ranging from 10~32 inches. www.j-oled.com/eng/press/20210329/ It remains to be seen if JOLED's panels will find their way into any iPads, but with the inkjet technology reportedly reducing production costs by 20~30% compared to conventional vapor deposition methods, the presence of a high-volume low-cost high-quality OLED manufacturer will apply downward pricing pressure across the entire market, and may soon reduce OLEDs to the stature of a commodity item rather than a premium sales feature.

Yes, miniLED is superior in multiple ways to OLED, but hardcore Samsung fans and those that are reluctant to adopt changes will take a while to acknowledge that. miniLED is a step towards microLED and they are the future. OLED will become the default cheaper option replacing LCD and will be around for many years until miniLED comes down in price. Samsung tried its own miniLED, AKA QLED but they had issues with blooming and have rebranded that as Neo QLED, moving to more like Apple's miniLED. I can say that the miniLED is far better than my Tab S7+ playing HDR and superior outdoors where reflections on the OLED Tab S7+ means a poorer experience.

Nice video. Would love to see a video on how environment-friendly Apple is? For a company that claims to reduce carbon emissions by skipping the charging brick, that is some digging into, tech reviewers should do. Also, I personally feel any new gadgets (let's say 2 yrs old), should get a very low trade-in value because you are trading them in before the EOL of that particular device. And for Apple, it gives updates for 5 years, so it would make sense and really environmentally friendly if they recommend people not to trade in devices that are less than 2 years old. That move would be great for the environment (if they really cared)

    • daniel_960_
      daniel_960_

@PSYCHO just no. Perfect blacks alone don’t make a panel superior. Though it’s a big factor. If the rest of the panel can’t get bright enough and have suboptimal colors then the blacks of oleds wont safe it. There isn’t a really good oled panel yet that would fit a tablet. Well probably will be somewhen in the future. Only phone oleds can be considered perfect currently. TVs have much improved but are still best for darker rooms. For bright rooms a good LCD is still better. I love my Oled TV and the one in my Phone. But the oleds I could get for my Tablet and Laptop probably would leave me disappointed, because I need that brightness.

    • PSYCHO
      PSYCHO

@daniel_960_ Even the OLED panel from the 1st gen PlayStation Vita has superior picture quality vs the Mini LED LCD iPad Pro due to no backlight, TRUE blacks, and a superior response time. And stop calling it "mid sized". You're confusing that with mid-range.

    • daniel_960_
      daniel_960_

@PlaxyVoid mid size... you know what that means? Phone oleds are excellent rn, bigger ones not so much. TVs again are also pretty good, only drawback is abl. But stuff in the tablet and laptop size isn't as good as those. Still good, but mini led currently would definitely be superior.

What’s up with micro LED though? I prefer LED any time. I can feel OLED in my brain. Will never buy a big screen OLED, due to the reasons you mentioned. LED has a sort of calming feeling. OLED can have a little virtual feel.

    • Kyle K.
      Kyle K.

@daniel_960_ That’s actually one of the methods being researched, so perhaps. I’m sure it might be possible down the road. Again, MicroLEDs are tough little bastards. Quantum Dot technology (not to be confused with Samsung’s QLED, which is just 100% marketing b.s. and not true Quantum Dot technology) is also being researched to make diodes smaller. Smaller designs may actually be simpler for the reason you pointed out, but anything bigger than a watch or VR glasses is going to be much more difficult). I still don’t see MicroLED taking hold for at least a few years. Maybe longer.

    • daniel_960_
      daniel_960_

@Kyle K. I keep hearing rumors about a microLED Apple watch lol. And I know how far off microLED is. But that makes me think, maybe really small screens are easier to produce? Like maybe it could be printed, like using chip technology. That would be impossible for larger scale like a TV but maybe could work for a watch.

    • Kyle K.
      Kyle K.

@Tino I have, and it is better. And again, the technology is in its infancy. When OLED was first being produced, it fell behind initially to the best LED panels. And MicroLED already looks better than most LED and OLED panels.

    • Tino
      Tino

@Kyle K. have you ever seen a micro LED panel, compared to OLED? Its not really the same its inferior

    • Kyle K.
      Kyle K.

@Tino I just said the downside was the difficulty of manufacturing and cost of production. It’s also a brand new technology, still largely in the development phase, so little is known about the longevity and reliability of MicroLED panels. If something is difficult to produce, that means the cost to produce it goes up, which means devices that utilize MicroLED panels will be costly, possibly even more so than devices using OLED panels. But the technology itself is superior to both traditional LED-LCD and OLED panels by the very nature of its design.

They’re doing OLED on the iPad Air because they can barely source LTPO OLEDs for iPhones. It will be even harder for full size iPads. I’m pretty sure if they had the capacity for it they would just put OLED on all of them until MicroLED is developed. OLED on an iPad Air that won’t have an LTPO 120Hz display makes sense for that reason

The eyes of "tech enthusiast" is different from ordinary people. They can see the smallest pixel and can see different spectrum of light, movement of the screen, screen hertz etc. That's why they're so picky. oh they are scared that mini led got deep black now. The only true advantage of Oled over LCD. I personally don't want that fragile burn in prone tech on an expensive device. The device is there to serve me, not the other way around.

This is one of the hardest working CNhave families in the tech space, and I genuinely appreciate the videos they put out. They are always well researched, accurate, honest, and most importantly for me, super helpful in informing my purchasing decisions as an average dude with a family who needs to take a bit of extra time in deciding how best to spend my hard earned $$$. Thank you guys - keep doing what you do and I'll be here to celebrate with y'all when you inevitably hit 1 million subs!

@Tomasz Rabianski yeah I prefer bigger screens and definitely prefer the iPad for daytime viewing(plus it’s 120 hertz) but I prefer my iPhone for nighttime viewing because zero blooming. I also occasionally use my sisters Samsung tab s7 and I like it over the iPad ONLY AT NIGHT

@Apple_Guy SL @PSYCHO Idk guys, I use iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPad Pro 12’9. Both are fantastic screens, but personally I prefer Mini-Led on iPad Pro. Maybe because it’s a much bigger screen and HDR pictures and videos look more impressive… On the other hand, I also have 11 inch M1 iPad Pro (I use 2 iPads at work simultaneously). This one is definitely inferior to the two above. I mean it’s a good LCD, but it isn’t that special. I would absolutely buy a 26-28 inch version of that Mini-Led goodness if Apple decided to release one (and was not as ridiculously expensive as Pro Display XDR).

    • Apple_Guy SL
      Apple_Guy SL

@PSYCHO grey to black response times are horrible on OLED, and although OLED is better than mini-LED in basically every way, all I was saying was that mini-LED is much brighter for longer than OLED. I still personally prefer OLED.

    • PSYCHO
      PSYCHO

@Apple_Guy SL HDR isn't solely about peak brightness. What AMOLED lacks in HDR peak brightness, it makes up for with contrast ratio, TRUE blacks, and a superior response time. Anything with a backlight looks inferior.

    • Apple_Guy SL
      Apple_Guy SL

@PSYCHO yeah superior image quality, but it’s much dimmer in sustained peak brightness

Mini led is still relatively new. Blooming will be better moving forward, before straight up micro led. I have burn in on samoled, so oled doesn't make sense for laptops for me. iPad maybe not suitable as well if used like a computer, running word document or pdf for extended period without screen timeout or pixel shifting.

    • PSYCHO
      PSYCHO

Blooming WON'T be better moving forward. Full Array Local Dimming is the reason WHY the Mini LED LCD iPad Pro has blooming. Any display with Edge-lit local dimming or Full Array Local Dimming will have blooming. That's why AMOLED is superior. Watch this to understand local dimming. cnhave.info/limo/iKbVqHmazaadq4Y/sh-p-n

I've always felt OLED, while being great, isn't the objectively better screen tech the way most people think. The reasons you listed in this video make a lot of sense with why Apple seems to be going with LED over OLED for their pro stuff. OLED is better basically only in black levels, but it's draw backs can't be overcome. OLED has no improvement left to make. There is no way to fully eliminate risk of burn in and no way to make it brighter without making the organic diodes die faster. Whereas, LED tech still has lots of room for improvement. You can do smaller/more dimming zones (Eventually leading to Micro-LED level dimming zone per pixel tech), it can always get brighter, and it doesn't have any of the OLED downsides of pixels dying over time or getting burn in. As that Sony reference monitor comparison you sited shows, it's getting there where with the right implementation, it can more or less match what OLED does while eliminating the drawbacks. OLED on the surface level is the winner because it packs the black level punch now, but Apple again seems to be playing a longer game here that in the grand scheme of things may be the winning choice.

I like this channel but there are quite some misinformation in this video 1) Burn-in is some yesterday's news. You can found tons of 24*7 brutal tests on the internet and since 2018 or 19 OLEDs are basically burn-in free. 2) Sony using LCD display in their reference monitors =/= all LCDs are good. Sony's monitors have extremely high NATIVE contrast ratio (meaning they don't need any FALD technology to reach deep black, so those side effects like blooming, back light fluctuation etc. are generally avoided or alleviated). Apple's miniLED is still using IPS panels with 1000:1 native contrast ratio, which is garbage. Sorry for the harsh word but in today's TV market 1000:1 is indeed only seen a very low-end models. Most high-end TVs are at least 4000:1 now. The only reason that the blooming is not that obvious on the iPad is that the screen size is tiny which hides a lot of problems. You put that screen on a 85" TV and it will be insufferable.

    • PhotoEngineering
      PhotoEngineering

LCD also have other issues. Basically they only have one advantage: they're brighter. And it's often the only thing that most people will notice. But for those who are used to motion-artifact-free viewing experience let's say there are only a handful of affordable LCD models that can really match an OLED (such as Samsung Q95A). And these models are way better than Apple's mini-LED. On the other hand, TVs are generally MUCH better than computer monitors in terms of picture quality. So if you compare Apple's XDR to other PC/tablet screens then yes they're indeed very good.

oled is not superior … it won’t be used for pro computers or tablets until it gets rid of the flickering issues. It’s only superior to mini led in a dark room.

Weak argument. If that were the case then Apple wouldn't be using the superior AMOLED panels in their flagship iPhones like the 11 Pro and 12 Pro models. It's hilarious that my friend's 12 Pro Max has superior picture quality vs the Mini LED LCD iPad Pro. 😂

Don't get why people fanboy so much about OLED, it has such a short life span WAKE UP PEOPLEEE, microLED solves that plus other advantages. I've seen so many burnt-in OLED displays, like just go to a store with phones and you will see screens with a "pink stamp" of something. (Even my previous Samsung got burn-in 2 times, yeah even after replacing it)

    • F11
      F11

@Commentary Talk yes there is!! But that won’t help, it’s really from OLED being organic, the material itself simply has less life, mainly the blue light dots. You can’t solve that, just mitigate it with better screen matrix or smart software features to help it.

2022 OLED in an iPad Air makes better sense from a product perspective. It’s supply chain scoring that determines that, of course……. Tim Cook is probably looking to negotiate a huge price break to source that many panels

    • id deegee
      id deegee

@Mohammad Witwit yeah, but unfortunately the battery health could not be fixed by iOS update if it's already broken (unless it's a software bug). It happened most likely because of overheating (one of the main reasons), especially noticeable in the 14.6 that overheats iOS devices a lot. That's another similar tweet twitter.com/StephPedrazzi/status/1397228658931208198?s=20 And btw this issue started with releasing 14.5 back in april (not as bad as 14.6 but still) so your 2 months confirm that...
